Clark's name is the clearest physical evidence left by the expedition. Though possible traces have been found in Washington state, such as a branding iron bearing the name "Cap. M. Lewis" found in 1892, archaeologists are still looking for positive signs at several potential campsites. No matter what is found, Clark's signature will no doubt remain the most colorful mark left on the landscape they explored.

The Bureau of Land Management administers the site, which is open May through October. The pillar is visible from the road and Clark's signature is as well-protected as it is unmistakable. A closed-circuit system and a plaque in the visitor center display the signature for those who can't climb the 200 feet. Interpretive programs and displays complete the experience in season. The Visitor Center is open 8 to 8.

The site is only half an hour from Montana's biggest city, Billings. Pictograph Cave State Park, museums, art centers, and trolley-car tours in and around Billings are popular attractions.
