Historic and Scenic Byways
Northwest Passage Scenic Byway 202 miles from Lewiston, Idaho and follows Highway 12 to the Idaho/Montana border. The byway splits at Kooskia, south on State Highway 13 to Grangeville, and continues east on US Hwy 12 along the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River and the Lochsa Wild and Scenic River through the majestic wilderness route that Lewis and Clark followed in 1805.
Gold Rush Historic Byway The Gold Rush Historic Byway begins at the junction of US 12 and State Hwy 11 at Greer on the Clearwater River. The byway encompasses 42.5 miles of 2-lane road with some passing lanes. The road is well maintained with several turnouts for scenic viewing. You won't want to miss the breathtaking panoramic view of the Clearwater Valley. The road can be icy during winter months. Allow at least 2 1/2 hours for the round trip.
Elk River Back Country Byway See nature at it's best - uncut and natural. The Elk River Back Country Byway is an all natural, no frills pathway through North Central Idaho. It's 57 miles provide of adventure, fun and relaxation. The road is a 2-lane county road that is paved to one mile beyond Dent Bridge. From Dent Bridge the road is gravel to Elk River. At Elk River the roadway is again a paved 2-lane road with slow vehicle turnouts. The route is well maintained year round but can be icy in winter. Allow 2 hours one way
